Establishment and Mission of CRE

Centre for Research in Education was established on August1st, 2011 as a part of the Institute for Research in Communication SAS. It represents a new period of basic research in education, which has been developed here since the late 90-ties. The research activities of the Centre are aimed at fundamental questions of education in connection with contemporary research trends in human sciences (pedagogy, philosophy of education, sociology, psychology and other relevant disciplines). In connection with previous investigations conducted so far, the current research continues to be developed in two distinct lines:

  • The impact of innovative educational interventions on the development of reading skills of primary school pupils, with an emphasis on metacognitive and cognitive strategies for learning and reading
  • Modern educational technologies and their integration into teaching to improve reading literacy, complex problem solving and reduce educational inequalities across various social groups
  • Mechanisms of self-regulated learning (SRL) and its impact on reading literacy and complex problem-solving skills in children and learners
  • The long-term impact of innovations in teaching to improve the professional development of teachers and the quality of teaching in Slovak schools

In a view of long-term perspective the CRE will contribute to:

  • The Centre will contribute to research on the effectiveness of evidence-based educational strategies and to improving their application in school settings
  • The Centre will engage in an international dialogue on innovative technologies and their impact on education
  • The Centre will become a key player in research on language literacy, metacognition and self-regulated learning within the Slovak and international scientific community
  • The Centre will establish and strengthen cooperation with other research and higher education institutions in order to place the Slovak Republic among the leading countries in the field of basic and applied educational psychology research

The Centre for Research in Education is open to collaboration with a wide scale of prospective partners – within a worldwide network of research institutions and universities, as well as other subjects including schools, state and nongovernmental organization working in field of education in Slovakia.
