Antecedents of intergroup solidarity in the context of societal crises: a mixed method approach
Duration: 1. 1. 2022 - 31. 12. 2025
Evidence number: 2/0102/22
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Lášticová Barbara, PhD.
SAS cosolvers: Mgr. Poslon Xenia Daniela, PhD., Prošek Tomáš, Ph.D., Mgr. Ševčíková Henrieta
Annotation: Societal crises such as Covid-19 pandemics have shown inspiring acts of solidarity, but have also contributed to deepening of differences between advantaged and disadvantaged groups and, in some cases, to worsening of intergroup relations as a result of increased perceptions of threat. The project aims to investigate what predicts and what prevents solidarity on behalf of different groups. While intergroup contact might increase solidarity on behalf of disadvantaged groups in advantaged groups and inspire them to act as allies in mobilizing for social change, perceived intergroup harmony resulting from positive contact might prevent collective action in disadvantaged groups. System justification, on the other hand, in both minority and majority members inhibits participation in system-challenging collective action. This project draws on SIMCA model of collective action, intergroup contact and system justification theories to investigate cognitive, emotional, ideological, as well as behavioral antecedents and outcomes of solidarity towards the Roma and the immigrants. We use mixed-methods research design: interviews with minority and majority activists, questionnaire data and experiments.
Language and cognitive impacts of socio-economic, cultural and educational conditions in preschool age on the development of literacy in primary education

Other cosolvers: Petrová Zuzana doc., PhDr. PhD.
Annotation: The aim of the project is to monitor the long-term effects of the new concept of pre-primary language educationon the development of several indicators of language literacy. The main focus will be on the language andcognitive precursors of the development of reading literacy in interaction with non-cognitive factors, monitored inthe continuity from preschool to younger school age with a specific focus on several characteristics of the familyand kindergarten environment. These will be represented in the project by the level of implementation of thenational curriculum the State educational program for pre-primary education in preschools, ESCS and cognitive, metacognitive and non-cognitive stimulating online environment. Methodologically, the project will comparespecific research sample with several reference groups monitored in 2016-2019. The examination of thelong-term effects of ESCS will be supplemented by the secondary analyses of relevant data from PIRLS andPISA testing.
Family constellations involving biological and non-biological children
Duration: 1. 1. 2021 - 31. 12. 2024
Evidence number: 2/0035/21
Program: VEGA
Project leader: doc. Mgr. Popper Miroslav, CSc.
SAS cosolvers: doc. PhDr. Bianchi Gabriel, CSc., Mgr. Hargašová Lucia, PhD., prof. PhDr. Lukšík Ivan, CSc., Mgr. Očenášová Zuzana, PhD., Mgr. Šuľová Mária
Other cosolvers: Prof.
Annotation: The project will investigate ‘mixed’ family constellations consisting of related biological and non-biological family members. The intention is to explore parenting in multi-parent families, that is, in families where the child was conceived with another person(s). That person could be a previous partner, an egg or sperm donor, a surrogate mother or – in foster and adoptive families – the biological parent(s). The aim is to explore the relationship between complex family constellations (patchwork families) and quality of life in children and parents, along with the reasons, motives, contexts and consequences of entering into a second or subsequent partnership or marriage or conceiving a child with the assistance of a third person.
The role of new media in supporting higher quality of life, resilience and education levels in children, youth and young adults depending on (non) existence of a disability, their ethnicity and socioeconomic status
Duration: 1. 1. 2021 - 31. 12. 2024
Evidence number: VEGA 2/0169/21
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Petrjánošová Magda, PhD.
Annotation: An effective use of the new media potential can bring benefits in higher quality of life, resilience, self-esteem, better access to information and education. However, even the newest research shows inequalities in access and use, depending on socioeconomic status, gender and education level (digital divide) even in the youngest generation (<25 years). The optimistic assumption about a easy switch to online education for all Slovak children and youth during the corona crisis in 2020 showed big problems in this area clearly. But about the situation in Slovakia there is not enough precise information, especially about specific youth subgroups. Therefore, in our project we focus on children, youth and young adults (10-25 years old) 1) from ethnic minorities, 2) with a disability or 3) from families with low socioeconomic status. The goal of the project is to map their possibilities, extent, forms, real psychological benefits of and barriers to new media use of these potentially vulnerable young people groups.
ELD-ET - Effective reading behavior strategies studied at key stages of literacy development
Duration: 1. 7. 2020 - 30. 6. 2024
Evidence number: APVV-19-0074
Program: APVV
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Zápotočná Oľga, CSc.
SAS cosolvers: doc., PhDr. Petrová Zuzana, PhD., Mgr. Urban Kamila, PhD.
Other cosolvers: Katedra knižničnej a informačne
Annotation: The project addresses current trends in literacy research in today’s information society. These trends involve searching for new and more complex models of reading behaviour in the increasingly complex information and media environments. The research investigating new forms of reading requires combination of traditional assessment methods with new and more sensitive tools. The emphasis is placed at transdisciplinary collaboration, drawing on scientific knowledge developed in psychology, education and library and information sciences. The objective of the interdisciplinary research team will be to demonstrate and empirically support the premise that, despite the increasing cognitive demands on reading in ICT settings, the nature and quality of reading remains the same. Its development depends on a stimulating language and literary environment during the early childhood. In this research the stimulating environment is represented by the implementation of a new language teaching programme (Zápotočná, Petrová, ŠVP, 2016) in selected preschools. The long-term effects of the programme based on this conception will be study using various cognitive, linguistic and metacognitive indicators of early literacy in preschool age children. The effects will be evaluated from a longitudinal perspective (2021-2022) – the same sample of preschoolers will be monitor in their first year of school – and their results will by compared with the results of children attended previous language preschool programme. The eye-tracking method will be used to investigate the direct effect that various forms of literary communication have on the quality and intensity of reception in preschool age children. This will make it possible to diagnose with more accuracy reading performances at subsequent stages of reading development (at school) and reading and information behaviours in different information environments.

MTIV - Milestones in transitions in intimate relationships and quality of life in adolescence and young adulthood
Duration: 1. 7. 2019 - 30. 6. 2023
Evidence number: APVV-18-0303
Program: APVV
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Lukšík Ivan, CSc.
SAS cosolvers: doc. PhDr. Bianchi Gabriel, CSc., Mgr. Fúsková Jana, PhD., Mgr. Hargašová Lucia, PhD., Mgr. Kallová Nikola, PhD., doc. Mgr. Popper Miroslav, CSc.
Annotation: The present research looks at how the process of becoming an adult is non-linear, individualized and being extended. Young people go through key stages in life such as the formation of close friendships, platonic love, falling in love, marriage and parenthood; yet, the traditional developmental theories are not able to fully explainthese. In the changing sociocultural and normative conditions, we lack information on when and how these transitions take place. The aim of this project is to pinpoint when and how the transitions in intimate relations during adolescence and young adulthood take place and ascertain the influence they have on young people’squality of life. The findings will be useful in reassessing and enriching knowledge on the psychological, social, ethical and cultural determinants of development, and can be used in marriage and parenthood training and the promotion of sexual and reproductive health.
Social-psychology aspects of anti-discrimination interventions: A qualitative metaanalysis
Duration: 1. 1. 2019 - 31. 12. 2021
Evidence number: 2/0127/19
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Lášticová Barbara, PhD.
SAS cosolvers: Mgr. Hargašová Lucia, PhD., Mgr. Kanyicska Belán Dóra, PhD., Mgr. Poslon Xenia Daniela, PhD., Mgr. Ševčíková Henrieta
Annotation: In social psychology, there is an ongoing discussion that inducing intergroup harmony via positive intergroup contact can have sedative effects and legitimize social hierarchy instead of reinforcing collective action motivations, especially in stigmatized outgroups. The main objective of the project will be to carry out a qualitative meta-analysis of antidiscrimination interventions from the perspective of recent social-psychology theories. The research design will be multiple case study. We will focus on interventions that have been carried out in Slovak schools in last 10 years, and focusing on various outgroups (mainly Roma, migrants). We will explore, through which psychological mechanisms (affective, cognitive, behavioural) these interventions reduce prejudice and whether, at the same time, they reinforce collective action in favour of minorities. Finally, we will describe building blocks of the interventions that have potential to succeed, taking into consideration the optimal conditions of intergroup contact (Allport, 1954; Pettigrew & Tropp, 2006; Paluck, Green & Green, 2017).
Pedagogical impacts and developmental achievements resulting from curricular changes in preschool education
Duration: 1. 1. 2018 - 31. 12. 2020

Annotation: Project is following on the research activities of the project team members connected with the development, implementation and evaluation of national curriculum for early childhood education, which came into force in 2016. Research will be conducted as series of impact studies in two main domains. Firstly, processes relevant to implementing the curriculum will be the subject of the study, specifically as they are reflected and evaluated by direct and indirect participants of early childhood education, and interpreted against contemporary expert discourse in a field of preschool pedagogy. Secondly, particular focus will be laid on substantial parameters and indicators of language, cognitive and metacognitive development of children in specific conditions relevant to the curriculum. Research will help to understanding the path of language and cognitive development of the children, and will contribute to the evaluation of program effectiveness, notably in the area of “language and communication”.
Twenty-first century traditional and alternative parenthoods: motivations, dilemmas, and consequences.
Duration: 1. 1. 2017 - 31. 12. 2020
Evidence number: 2/0027/17
Program: VEGA
Project leader: doc. Mgr. Popper Miroslav, CSc.

Other cosolvers: Marková Dagmar doc. PhDr. PhD
Annotation: The project focuses on investigating current social representations of traditional and alternative forms of parenthood from the perspective of their coping and the quality of life. The traditional forms are bound to matrimony, non-traditional forms represent different non-marital coexistence, e.g. cohabitance, professional, adoptive, separated (single, LAT, divorced), lesbian and parenthoods in older age. The objective of the project is to study discourses on parenthoods, to elucidate to what extent the scientific representations reflect on legislature, to analyze social representations of parenthood in mass media and in everyday discussions of the particular groups of parents. At the same time, the project will monitor the prevalence of individual forms of parenthoods in Slovakia. The project aims to clarify what are the motivations leading to parenthood, which barriers people face, how satisfied they are with their parenthood and identify the schemes ofcoping and the way to the quality of life.
New media and lowering the threshold for civic participation in less participating groups: analysis of best practices, “white crow” cases and subjective barriers of participation in Slovakia
Duration: 1. 1. 2016 - 31. 12. 2019
Evidence number: 2/0123/16
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Petrjánošová Magda, PhD.
SAS cosolvers: Mgr. Blažeková Kristína, Mgr. Sládeková Romana
Annotation: In general, a positive influence of new media on civic participation is assumed, but in order to effectively use themit is necessary to have access (digital inequality) and to acquire specific skills (digital literacy). In Slovakia, digitalliteracy is distributed unevenly in connection to age and economic income. That could limit specific groups in theirwish to participate online (and thus replicate the unequal opportunities characteristic for participation in general). Therefore we concentrate on civically active as well as non-active individuals with a special focus on generallyless participating groups, such as 1) youth and young adults (15-25); 2) socially excluded youth (defined byincome); and 3) seniors (over 60). A combination of semi-structured interviews, critical discursive analysis andsecondary analysis of representative questionnaire data is used in order to describe subjective barriers ofparticipation, individual “white crows” cases as well as more broadly used best practices.

Itconcentrates on the barriers and facilitators of activity and participation from the perspective of the individuals with disabilities themselves and persons from their close social environment. Research will be conducted in the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Children & Youth (2007).Based on biopsychosocial approach the full inclusion of individual in society, activity and participation as important components of the functional capacity of the individual are emphasized. Psychological analysis will contribute to identify the determinants of activity and participation enable to clarify the conditions for supporting activity and participation and development of functioning of children and adolescents with disabilities.
INTERMIN - Interventions for Reducing Prejudice against Stigmatized Minorities: Developing measures and experimental testing of the contact hypothesis under field conditions.
Duration: 1. 7. 2015 - 30. 6. 2019
Evidence number: APVV-14-0531
Program: APVV
Project leader: Mgr. Lášticová Barbara, PhD.

Other cosolvers: PhDr. Andrej Findor, PhD., doc. Mgr. Martin Kanovský, PhD., Mgr. Miroslav Popper, PhD., Mgr. Peter Dráľ, Mgr. Miroslav Sirota, PhD.
Annotation: The main objective of the project is to create and experimentally test, via randomized controlled trials (RCT), the efficacy of intervention tools for reducing ethnic and racial prejudice and discriminatory behaviour towards Roma minority members from segregated communities. The project draws on research concerning positive consequences of direct (Pettigrew, Tropp, 2011), imagined (Miles, Crisp, 2014) and vicarious contact (Vezzali et al., 2014) for prejudice reduction. First, we will choose tools for explicit and implicit prejudice measurement, adapt them to the Roma minority as a target outgroup, and validate them in the Slovak context. Second, we will develop and pilot-test three types of interventions, based on three different types of contact (direct, imagined, vicarious) and choose the one with the strongest effect. Third, in the main field experiment via RCT in Slovak high schools, we will test the effect of this main intervention on dependent variables such as attitudes, prejudice and behavioural intentions. Secondary transfer will also be measured, i.e. possible generalization of positive consequences of interventions concerning Roma minority on attitudes towards other stigmatized minorities (Harwood et al, 2010). Fourth, Correspondence Test of Discrimination (Bertrand & Mullainathan, 2004) will be used to test the effect of the main intervention on discriminatory behaviour of the high school pupils towards Roma from marginalized communities. Fifth, we will test the durability of effect of the main intervention and the possibilities of multiplication of project results in secondary education.

Literacy as a tool of social inclusion of children from low socioeconomic background and marginalized
Duration: 1. 1. 2015 - 31. 12. 2017
Evidence number: 2/0140/15
Program: VEGA
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Zápotočná Oľga, CSc.

Annotation: The project is the reaction to social exclusion of marginalised ethnic groups. It suggests theoretical and empirical analyses of two concepts, key to deal with problem of social and cultural exclusion by means of education: The current concept of literacy which is helpful as the background for deeper reflection of the issue, its foundation, causality, mechanisms, cultural and educational stereotypes responsible for reproducing social exclusion and for developing potential solutions of the problem. And, the concept of inclusive education, its current condition in Slovak educational system showing the gap between politically declared level of inclusion and educational practice, aimed at identifying relevant factors responsible for creating pro-inclusive educational environment, with specific focus on participants of education. International and comparative research design will enrich the understanding of cultural specifics of Slovak educational reality of children from marginalised communities.
Imagined contact as a tool for prejudice reduction? Testing the method in Slovak context.
Duration: 1. 1. 2015 - 31. 12. 2017
Evidence number: 2/0079/15
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Mgr. Lášticová Barbara, PhD.
SAS cosolvers: Mgr. Andraščiková Simona , doc. PhDr. Bianchi Gabriel, CSc., Mgr. Fúsková Jana, PhD., Mgr. Petrjánošová Magda, PhD.
Other cosolvers: Andrej Findor, Peter Broniš, Zuzana Maďarová, Veronika Valkovičová
Annotation: Imagined intergroup contact is an indirect contact strategy that aims to strengthen tolerance and contribute to more positive intergroup relations. A metaanalysis of more than 70 studies (Miles, Crisp, 2014) has shown that the mere fact that the participants imagine a positive interaction with and outgroup member can lead to prejudice reduction, and to a more positive intergroup behaviour. However, ethnic groups and interethnic relations have been underrepresented in the research carried out thus far. The first objective of the project is to experimentally test the imagined contact hypothesis in the context of interethnic relations in Slovak Republic, mainly relations of the majority towards the Roma minority, but also towards other relevant minorities. The second objective is to create an implicit prejudice measure tool – a version of IAT, adapted to Roma minority. The third objective is to create a pilot version of an intervention tool toreduce ethnic and racial prejudice towards Roma minority, which could be used in educational context.

SAS cosolvers: Mgr. Čikel Marek, prof. PhDr. Višňovský Emil, CSc.
Annotation: This research project constitutes a theoretical analysis of the problem of the art of living and the closely-related concept of philosophical counselling. The focus of attention is on ‘how should we live?’ and ‘what gives life value?’. The research will look primarily at current interpretations of approaches to life and the search for a model of the good life. The problem of the art of living has not been sufficiently developed within Slovak academic writing and the topic has received little attention to date. The research team will analyse this issue within the context of philosophical counselling, where issues associated with the art of living play a crucial role. The research will also focus on the concept of a ‘philosophy for life’, which has an important role to play in people’s lives.

Annotation: The philosophical issues will be studied in the context of the reflection of the need of a more subtle theoreticalfoundation of philosophical counselling. The project seeks to find the boundaries of understanding the possibilitiesof philosophy in practical life and to formulate an opinion on the competency of philosophy in this area. Theresearch outlines the main ideas as a basis for building the movement of philosophical counselling, indicatesconflicts relating to the understanding of philosophical practice; the research into the interest in philosophicalcounselling helps monitor possibilities for the use of these activities for secondary school and university studentsin our country. The leitmotif of the research is the quest for a reply to the question whether philosophicalcounselling would be useful for educational process and whether it would help young people.Scientific
Performing culture and the culture of accountability in contemporary streams of educational reforms
Duration: 1. 1. 2012 - 31. 12. 2014
Evidence number: 1/0091/12
Program: VEGA
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Zápotočná Oľga, CSc.
Annotation: Latest theoretical analyses of school systems and educational policies indicate their strong inclination for reductionist and economic values with subsequent changes in the nature of education at many different levels. Manifestation of these tendencies appears in an growing pressure on school accountability and performance and its periodical verification. The project aspires to prove how this culture of audit penetrate into the educational environment and how it shapes the core mission of education at the level of school system including its individual subjects. Empirical investigations will be aimed at the analyses of evaluative programmes at the level of international and national assessment projects, along with further tools affecting the culture of teacher profession via the external control of teaching performance. Interconnection of these influences should reveal how this type of educational policy modifies the content and goals of education, leading to the deconstruction of teacher\' autonomy.

Annotation: The so called new media are in comparison to mass media based on multidirectional information flows andinteractivity, this being a pre-condition of their potential for strengthening democracy. But to use them, it isnecessary to have access (the problem of digital inequality) and to have special skills for their effective use(digital literacy). Today, the new media are used by approximately 50% Slovak citizens, but these are theyounger, more educated citizens, from bigger cities and towns. The aim of the research project is therefore tocritically assess the applicability of the democratization potential of new media thesis in the Slovak context. In thefirst (and main) phase the goal is to map the current situation of civic participation online in Slovakia. In thesecond phase the goal is to critically assess to what extend the assumed positive potential of the internet (as anew participation environment) for support and development of civic participation is used in the Slovak context.

Annotation: The project will focus on the reflection of the place of philosophical thought and aesthetic perception in everydaylife. It seeks an answer to the question of how philosophizing and aesthetic experiences contribute to a higherquality of the orientation in the world and to the accomplishment of a personal ideal of good life. We will studywhether philosophical thought and artistic presentations still preserve their role at the time of hunt for money andeconomic welfare. In the aesthetic part we shall concentrate on exploring how art, aesthetic experiences, andtheir reflection are able to improve the quality of life. The philosophical issues will chiefly be studied in thecontext of the reflection of the need of a more subtle theoretical foundation of philosophical counselling; a probewill be used for verifying the need of philosophizing in adolescent secondary school and university students. Inthis context, we shall try to create thematic areas of philosophical counselling for the period of adolescence

Annotation: The project responds to - contemporary still unresolved - questions concerning a vague and conceptualy uncertain/obscure definition of “eduacation”, which complicates a theoretical discourse on the issue, as well as, any attempts for its inovative changes. The project approaches to the above problem from the point of view of “cultural literacy and its reproduction” - the concept being considerred as culturaly invariant (and universal) goal of education. Within the above theoretical framework the project would reflect on the present and prospective changes of educational school environment, ongoing on behalf of contemporary school reform. Particular indicators and changes of school environment (including both – curicular and extracuricular conditions and consequences) will be (thus) analysed and verified againgst the key concept of reproduction of cultural literacy. The main question being raised will ask how the changes implemented into the school environment satisfy the essential social and cultural functions of education.

Annotation: The research on citizenship in social sciences includes a whole range of questions and phenomena that are crucial in contemporary European societies and are an important research topic in the European context. Our aim is to follow this trend within an integrative framework of this Centre of Excellence (CE) that will allow a synergy of particular empirical research projects and field interventions that have previously been realised separately by the institutions included in the CE.The mission of the Centre of Excellence of the Slovak Academy of Sciences COPART is to integrate existing capacities and create optimal conditions for cooperation of top experts in the domain of citizenship and civic participation. The Objectives of the Centre of Excellence are:1. To carry out complex and integrated research on citizenship and participation that would provide fundamental knowledge on state of the art, level, and forms of citizenship and civic participation in Slovakia in the context of European integration.2. To integrate academic/research and practice oriented institutions in order to test theoretical hypotheses in concrete interventions, educational programs and programs of stimulation of civic participation.3. To become an "incubation apparatus" for post-graduate students - PhD. students whose supervisors are members of the CE, but also other PhD. students - in several scientific disciplines (psychology, sociology, philosophy, political science, summer school for PhD. students and post-docs).The project of COPART offers an institutional basis for interdisciplinarity and creates a unique opportunity for collaboration of several outstanding Slovak experts. This is expected to result in a more complex understanding of citizenship, civic participation and possibilities of democratic development of the Slovak society. The multiplication of results will take place not only thanks to the participants from the Comenius University, but also thanks to three prominent NGOs that integrate top intervention, education and research potential.

Bioethics as a Challenge for Philosophy
Duration: 1. 1. 2006 - 31. 12. 2008
Evidence number: 1/3603/06
Program: VEGA
Project leader: prof. PhDr. Višňovský Emil, CSc.
Annotation: The aim of the project is to answer to the challenge put forward for philosophers by the field of bioethics in the 21st century with its novel and unconventional dilemmas. On the one hand the discussion on bioethical issues is going on without reflection of their philosophical background, which, however, are very often being implicitly applied. On the other hand philosophers do not devote nevenujú sufficient attention to bioethical issues. Some of current bioethical dilemmas such as reproductive and therapeutic human cloning, pre-implantation genetic diagnostics (PGD) and embryonal eugenics are not only challenges for applied ethics, legal theory and public policy, but with their complexity als refer to more substantial philosophical fundaments of bioetics. Bioetics pose new problems for ethics and philosophy, which are unconventional by their nature so that they demand new and deep rethinking of several fundamental philosophical and ethical concepts and conceptions. The aim of the project is to reflect philosophically on the bioethical problems of 21st century in a multidisciplinary and plural perspectíves. In particular the bioethical issues will be investigated at various levels of abstraction and from various standpoints - ontological, meta-ethical, theological, cultural, pragmatist and historical. These intentions are reflected in the multidisciplinary structure of the research team.

Annotation: The project responds to the basic questions regarding the nature of school education – its goals, contents and contextual characteristics and their consequences - from the point of view of a wider - social scientific approach to education. The objectives of the project are aimed at the theoretical and empirical search for meaning and relations between the school education and the wider sociocultural environment, which should deepened an understanding of how the school contributes to the reproduction of social life, maintaining the necessary intra-cultural social bonds/links, as well as an inter-cultural social balance/stability. In this view the project approaches to the theoretical analysis of the meaningfulness of basic education for an individual living in situated social context (defined by the space and historical time). Further, it is purported to the study of the educational projects of contemporary school from the point of view of their hidden influences. The links between the sociocultural environment and school education will bee studied via the discursive and nondiscursive school practices, naturally reflecting the bonds between the cultural tools and values of public life on one side, and the school institution on the other. The above methodological approach would allow to anew the concept and understanding of the essential functions of school and the basic education in a society. It would cover the gaps in a theoretical base underlining the current efforts for curricular transformations and reforms of the Slovak school including the revitalization of the values of basic education as a public wealth.

Annotation: The focus of the project shall be the theoretical reflection on the problems of the attitudes to life involved in the conceptions dealing with the issues of authenticity, creativity and originality with respect to interpretations of “good life“. It shall attempt at search for answers to questions such as: whether the “aestheticization of the ethical“ (e. i. the orientation to grace and delight, to personal expression and private self-perfection) may be considered as a predominant trend of our times; whether the force is being moved to the aesthetics of human action and the cult of physical beauty; to what extent the meritocratic world brings the challenge of “being successful“ and shifts the focusing to performance; in what way and to what measure these trends are being reflected in the value hierarchies of young generations in our society. The investigation of the issues of “good life“ and value-structure of current shifts in the attitudes to life shall be developed on the basis of reflecting necessity of a more subtle theoretical background of philosophical counseling. Annotation: The goal of this project is to explore the relationships between intimacy, normativity, and citizenship with the emphasis on examining possibilities of satisfying intimate needs. The research topic is thus oriented on the relationship between public and private spaces, distribution and accessibility of the public resources as well as setting the group boundaries, rules and norms and their consequences for the self-defining of the individuals and groups. The subject of investigation is the bridging between the personal and the political included in the term intimate citizenship. Intimate citizenship is to guarantee us the full realisation of our needs and decisions concerning our body, feelings and relationships, access to public devices, and to allow us to make decision concerning our identity, gender, erotic feelings and experiences. Social psychological investigation of intimacy can disclose the relationships between intimacy and social differences as class, ethnicity, gender, age etc. The final output of the project will be mainly the knowledge on how the representatives of different groups undergo their moral self-construction, how they construct their intimate needs and how people process institutional norms of intimacy – all of these on the background of current relevant public, media and institutional discourses concerning intimate citizenship and norms and their reflection by subpopulations and minorities facing problems in the realisation of their intimacy.

Annotation: The aim of this project is to evaluate the applicability of contemporary social identity and social categorization theories that aim to explain the processes of collective identity formation and change. The analysis of press will allow identifying what representations of Slovak nation were produced and circulated in the press in particular critical phases of the period 1989-2004; by whom and for what purposes they were used. This analysis will allow grasping the transformations of the conceptualisations of Slovak national identity in changing social and political context. Secondary analysis of the relevant empirical data from several previous research projects carried out by the principal investigator and her collaborators (semi-structured interviews, essays, continuous free associations) on the national identity issue will show how these conceptualisations were used (or not) by the individuals and groups for their self-definition. The comparison of the data gathered from the press analysis and from the empirical material of secondary analyses will allow identifying the discursive resources underlying the particular Slovak national identity constructions in the period between the independent Slovakia creation and its integration into the EU.
