Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, Slovakia has welcomed over 2.8 million refugees, with more than 130,000 individuals receiving Temporary Protection. Recognizing the critical need for evidence-based humanitarian response, UNHCR partnered with the Institute for Research in Social Communication of the Slovak Academy of Sciences to conduct the 2024 Slovakia Socio-Economic Insights Survey (SEIS).
The SEIS, previously known as the Multi-sector Needs Assessment (MSNA) conducted in 2022 and 2023, was carried out between May and July 2024 to guide the humanitarian response. It enables targeted and prioritized interventions amidst the ongoing emergency and informs planning for the 2025 response, ensuring it corresponds better to the needs of refugees.
Supported by an inter-agency Task Team, including UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, and WHO, the survey collected data from 874 refugee households across Slovakia. Our Institute contributed its expertise to analyze this data, ensuring a robust and comprehensive assessment. The findings address critical sectors such as protection, health, education, and livelihoods, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced by refugees, particularly women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Preliminary findings from SEIS have already informed humanitarian planning for 2025-2026 and will guide further interventions to prioritize and address the needs of refugees in Slovakia effectively. This collaborative effort exemplifies the commitment to harmonized and coordinated humanitarian action in line with regional refugee response plans.
