The Institute for Research in Social Communication of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (R2) for a two-year fixed-term position, starting in autumn 2024, with the possibility of extension depending on project funding, and a PhD. student (for a three-year study period).

The successful candidates will join a dynamic team working on cutting-edge research in educational psychology, with a focus on innovative instructional methods and reducing educational inequalities. The project, led by Dr. Kamila Urban, aims to enhance reading comprehension and problem-solving skills by developing educational tasks that integrate real-world issues such as climate change, pollution, and the energy crisis, thereby fostering scientific literacy and metacognition in primary school students.
Postdoctoral position
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in educational psychology, focusing on the development of innovative problem-solving tasks.
- Collaborate with Dr. Urban and other experts in literacy development and metacognition.
- Contribute to scholarly publications and present research findings at conferences.
- Engage in grant application preparation for national and international project schemes.
Specific Requirements:
- PhD in Psychology or Education (completed within the last 7 years or about to be obtained).
- Proficiency in advanced statistical methods.
- Proven record of scholarly publication in WOS/Scopus journals.
- Experience with research stays abroad (advantageous).
- Minimum B2 level of English; proficiency in Slovak is not required.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a scientific team.

PhD student
The dissertation project will explore the impact of metacognitive strategy instruction on enhancing individuals’ abilities to solve complex problems, with a special focus on applications within health psychology. By fostering metacognitive skills, individuals can better manage their cognitive resources, monitor their understanding, and adjust their strategies in dynamic and complex situations. Specific Requirements:
- Master’s degree in psychology, education or related field.
- Interest in research in metacognition and educational psychology.
- Minimum level of English B2; knowledge of Slovak an advantage.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
In addition to the above projects, our institute is involved in various research activities that address important issues in the field of social and educational psychology in which R1 and R2 researchers will have the opportunity to participate. The starting gross monthly salary will be set in accordance with Slovak Law, depending on qualifications and length of experience (the doctoral scholarship for R1 after the project proposal defense is 1 194,00 €/month net, while the minimum salary for postdoctoral position R2 at level 8 is min 1 280,50 €). We offer performance bonuses based on publications.
